The Beta Blocker and Clonidine Protocol

Lesson 5
Clonidine

6. Clonidine: Wallace Study Conclusions

Clonidine study conclusions? Clonidine is an alternative drug to beta blockers in patients who are at risk for perioperative beta blockade who can not tolerate a beta blocker. BBAC with prophylactic administration of Clonidine reduced incidence of myocardial ischemia, 30-day (p = 0.03), and 2 year mortality (p = 0.04).

Clonidine Study Conclusions

bullet Prophylactic Administration of Clonidine 0.2 mg po the night prior to surgery, 0.2 mg po the day of surgery, and a TTS-2 patch for 4 days reduces the incidence of myocardial ischemia by 50% in patients at risk for coronary artery disease undergoing non-cardiac surgery
bullet Prophylactic Administration of Clonidine reduced 30-day (p = 0.03) and 2 year mortality (p = 0.04).
